KENYA: French Cancel Nakuru Waste Project

TFRENCH Development Agency has cancelled financing the solid waste management project in Nakuru.

Through the Nakuru Municipal Council, the project was geared towards rehabilitating the expansive Gioto garbage dumping site in London area along the Nakuru-Kabarak road.

Also affected is the Mombasa Municipal Council.

FDA withdrew its financial support citing lack of progress since the agreement was signed in 2006.

A letter from FDA, addressed to Treasury PS Joseph Kinyua and copied to the clerks of the two municipalities, states, “...recalling the mutual conclusion reached, the project has not made sufficient progress on the key issues to warrant an extension of the deadline for disbursement. We wish to confirm that no further disbursement can now be made by FDA on the project”.

According to the Financing Agreement for Solid Waste Management in Nakuru and Mombasa, signed in 2006 between the government of Kenya and Agence Francaise de Development, the deadline for disbursement of the funds allocated was December 31,2011.

One of the key factors in the agreement was to find an appropriate land to relocate the dumping site.
